Toni's Take - Top 10 Highlights and News from 2011

Toni Montgomery - Communication's Manager

2012 is almost here and with it comes the typical “Top 10 Lists” ranging from the best photos to the top news stories of the year. It made me think, if I were to list the top 10 stories from 2011, what would they be? Well… here they are!

10. The Great East Coast Earthquake of 2011 – As I was working with my colleague on a project, her computer suddenly began to shake and we heard a slight rumble throughout the building. Yes folks, that was an earthquake. I think I need one of those t-shirts announcing that I survived my first PA earthquake!

9. Harrisburg’s Statue of Liberty Makes National News – As a child, I remember getting super excited every time we passed the mini Statue of Liberty sitting in the Susquehanna River off of RT 322 coming into Harrisburg. It may have been a slow news day, but still CBS News got excited and featured our statue on their national broadcast.

8. The Troops Come Home – No matter what political stance you take, it was great to see our troops start to come home this year from the Middle East! A huge thank you and hug goes out to every person who served for our nation!

7. The Flooding of 2011 – On the heels of the August Earthquake, Tropical Storm Lee came barreling into PA bringing devastating flooding to many in the Central Pennsylvania community.

6. Lady Gaga loves PA – She has been spotted throughout Lancaster County with many speculating that we may have a new famous resident in the near future. Lady Gaga loves our great state, but really, what’s not to love about PA?

5. The PSU Scandal – Our hearts broke and prayers continue to be sent up for all involved in this awful situation. Enough said…

Now onto financial news…

4. The Wall Street Journal Names Credit Unions a Better Deal than Banks – Every credit union member across the country cheered as those in the national media discovered what we have known for ages: Credit unions ARE a better deal than our banking counterparts!

3. Bank of America to Charge a $5 monthly Debit Card Fee – To add proof to my #4 news pick, BOA rolls out the news that they will be charging a $5 monthly fee to use their debit card in 2012.

2. Bank of America Retracts $5 Debit Card Fee – Bank officials determine that adding a $60 annual debit card fee may not be the most consumer friendly action in our current economic situation.

and...

1. Bank Transfer Day – “Bank Transfer Day” truly illustrated the power of one person and social media! One woman, fed up with bank fees, created a national movement with people across the country transferring their bank accounts to credit unions!

What is 2012 going to bring? We are about to find out! Happy New Year everyone!
